Foundation Course Entry Requirements
What you typically need to get onto a UK international foundation year — academic background, English level, age and subject requirements. This is the detailed companion to our foundation & pathway courses guide.
Indicative requirements — always check the specific provider. The figures below are common examples, not universal rules: entry requirements vary by provider, course and subject and change over time. Confirm the exact requirements with the university or pathway provider before applying. (Last checked 3 June 2026.)
Who needs a foundation course?
Foundation courses are mainly for international students whose school-leaving qualification isn't accepted for direct UK degree entry — often because their school system has fewer than 13 years of schooling — or who need extra academic or English preparation. The entry bar is therefore lower than for direct degree entry, but there are still requirements.

Academic entry (indicative)
You'll normally need a completed international secondary-school qualification. A common way providers describe the level is roughly the equivalent of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, sometimes with minimum grades in core subjects.

English language level (indicative)
Most international foundation years ask for around IELTS 5.0. Some accept slightly lower (for example 4.5 with no band below 4.0), and competitive pathways such as medicine or law usually need more. If you're below the requirement, providers often add extra pre-sessional English.
For accepted tests, the CEFR levels and how university English requirements work, see our English language requirements guide.
Age & subject requirements
- Age: varies by provider — commonly around 17–18. Some accept students from 16; others require you to be 18 by a set date.
- Subject: subject-specific pathways (e.g. engineering, science) often expect relevant subjects such as Maths or Physics; broader pathways are more flexible.
- Progression is conditional: meeting the entry requirements gets you onto the foundation course — your place on the degree still depends on hitting the required grades during it.
