UCAS Deadlines & Personal Statement

The UK undergraduate application timeline and the new personal statement, for international students applying through UCAS.

Deadlines change each cycle — always confirm current dates on ucas.com. The dates below are shown for a specific cycle and are not permanent. Last checked: 3 June 2026.

How UCAS works

UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the centralised system for applying to undergraduate courses in the UK. You submit one application — with your course choices, qualifications and a personal statement — through UCAS, and it's sent to your chosen universities. International students apply through the same UCAS system as UK students.

The two things that trip students up most are the deadlines (which differ by course type) and the personal statement (which changed format from 2026 entry). This guide covers both.

Key dates

Dates change every cycle. Last checked: 3 June 2026. Confirm the current dates on ucas.com.

Upcoming: 2027-entry cycle — headline deadlines

15 October 2026 (18:00 UK)

Oxford & Cambridge, and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science courses.

13 January 2027 (18:00 UK)

Equal-consideration deadline for all other 2027-entry undergraduate courses.

UCAS publishes the later-stage 2027 dates (Extra, decision and reply dates, Clearing, final deadline) closer to the time. The cycle below shows how those stages run.

15 October vs January — which applies to you?

15 October

For Oxford and Cambridge (you can only apply to one), and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses. These are very competitive and late applications are rarely considered.

Mid-January (equal consideration)

For all other undergraduate courses. Applications received by this deadline are all considered equally; after it, universities only consider applications if they still have space.

International applicants: apply as early as you can — it leaves time for offers, your Student visa (CAS), English evidence and finances.

Clearing & Extra

UCAS Extra — if you've used all five choices and hold no offers, Extra (opens around late February) lets you add another choice, one at a time.

Clearing — how you find a place if you don't hold an offer after results, applied late, or declined your offers. For the 2026 cycle it opened on 2 July 2026 and runs into October. You can search vacancies on UCAS and contact universities directly.

The new personal statement (2026 entry onwards)

From 2026 entry onwards, UCAS replaced the single free-form essay with three structured questions. The rules:

  • 4,000 characters in total, which you can split flexibly across the three answers.
  • Minimum 350 characters per answer.
  • The questions themselves do not count towards the 4,000-character limit.

1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?

2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

3. What else have you done to prepare outside of formal education, and why are these experiences useful?

How to approach each question

1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?

Show genuine, specific motivation — what draws you to the subject and what you find interesting about it. Avoid generic opening clichés; use a concrete example instead.

2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

Link your school/college subjects, skills and any relevant coursework to the demands of the course. Show what you learned, not just what you studied.

3. What else have you done to prepare outside of formal education, and why are these experiences useful?

Connect wider activities — reading, projects, work experience, volunteering, competitions — back to the subject, and reflect on what each taught you. Relevance and reflection matter more than a long list.

General tips

  • Be specific and reflective — show what you learned, don't just list activities.
  • Start early and redraft; keep within the limits (not too short, not maxed out for its own sake).
  • Tailor it to the subject, since you usually apply to similar courses across your five choices.

Write it yourself. Your personal statement must be your own work — we don't write statements for students, and you should never buy, copy or have someone else write yours. UCAS runs similarity detection on every statement, and copied or AI-generated work can be flagged and jeopardise your application.

Undergraduate vs postgraduate

This guide covers the undergraduate (UCAS) route. Postgraduate master's applications are usually made directly to the university, each with its own deadlines and process — check the university's own admissions pages for postgraduate courses.

Frequently asked questions

When is the UCAS deadline for 2027 entry?

For 2027 entry, applications to Oxford or Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses must reach UCAS by 18:00 (UK time) on 15 October 2026. The equal-consideration deadline for all other undergraduate courses is 18:00 (UK time) on 13 January 2027. Always confirm the current dates on ucas.com, as deadlines change each cycle.

What is the new UCAS personal statement format?

From 2026 entry onwards, the single free-form essay was replaced by three structured questions. You have 4,000 characters in total to split across the three answers, with a minimum of 350 characters per answer. The questions themselves do not count towards the character limit.

What are the three UCAS personal statement questions?

They are: 1) Why do you want to study this course or subject? 2) How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject? 3) What else have you done to prepare outside of formal education, and why are these experiences useful?

What is the 15 October UCAS deadline for?

The 15 October deadline applies to applications to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and to most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science. All other undergraduate courses use the later January equal-consideration deadline.

Do postgraduate students apply through UCAS?

UCAS is the route for undergraduate study. Most postgraduate master’s applications are made directly to the university rather than through UCAS, so check each university’s own admissions pages for postgraduate deadlines.

What is UCAS Clearing?

Clearing is how you can find a university place if you do not hold an offer after results, or if you applied late. For the 2026 cycle it opened on 2 July 2026 and runs into October. Confirm the current Clearing dates on ucas.com.
